Most every public beach is busy on the South Shore of the island Oahu.  These include Waikiki, Ala Moana and Diamond Head.  These are some of the most busiest beaches on the island. What surprises me is that not too far away, on the east side, it can be a completely different story.  Yes, of course, Hanauma bay and Sandys Beach are busy spots. However, most of the East facing shores have little to no beach and therefore are hardly used.

Along the east facing shores there are many surf breaks and miles of beautiful reef to explore. This area is primarily great for surfing, stand up paddling, kayaking. When the wind is good at spots like Toes at the base of Hawaii Loa Ridge, windsurfers and kite surfers are enjoying the water.  The area really attracts those that enjoy the water. There are some spots for swimming, but not so many spots to sun bath on vast stretches of sandy beach. This is one of the reason that ocean front property is so popular along the east side. Not only do the residents get to enjoy being on the water, but they also have privacy.  People that live on the beach can have people walk in front of their homes because all beach is public, with a few exceptions.

Perhaps one of the only drawbacks to being on the water on the east side is that likely the property will front on busy Kalanaianaole Highway. While there are some elegant and sizable properties on Kalanianaole Highway that also are waterfront, it may be less noisy to off of the highway.  That is one reason that pockets such as Niuiki Circle and Wailupe Circle are popular.  These two small neighborhoods on the makai (ocean) side of Kalanaianaole Highway are coveted.  They are typically very quiet and the homes are well cared for.
